One would think I would know better by now… But there are consequences when Citygirl just hikes out into a pecan orchard with babe in tow. My amazing new friend Angie Davis, of Angie Davis Photography took me to this amazing location for some girlfriend shooting. Her son Colten (I don’t know if that’s how his name is spelled) came with us, along with 2 chairs, and a stroller. Nan of course… no nap or a very short doze was pretty crabby and not in a photo-mood. In fact all she wanted to do was fuss and push that dang stroller.. thru weeds… and sticks.
Anyway, me, the Citygirl just decides that we need to shoot out where the sun was laying on these beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves, against these perfectly planted historic pecan trees. It was seriously breathtaking. I could already envision my sweet Nan, propped on a chair in her sweet orchard like clothes with this amazingness around her. I could SEE the image in my head what I wanted… and thus she was crabby. Really… really… c.r.a.b.b.y.
“No, Mom!”
“Please, Nannie, just one little smile?”
“No, Mom. No Pictures!”
And each became a little more stern and angry until we were in a full meltdown. An accidental stick poke in the thigh and fighting vines didn’t help, worse… very.independent.two.year.old… I didn’t even ask her that many times. After about what seemed an hour but probably more like 20 minutes we decided to pack up.
SO… what happens when Citygirl just frolics out into a lovely field of red, orange and yellow?

1.) She picks up so many hitchhikers, she begins to feel a little dirrty. She also was silly and didn’t take her $200 woven wool coat off, which was equally as covered in these things.

This was only one SIDE after a very gentle washing. Oh and after 1 hour of picking.
2.) Babe gets stuck with a stick, makes for a small scratch, but a very, very irritated Nan.
3.) From walking thru those beautiful red and orange leaves, she doesn’t have THAT long of legs so she’s walking thru these hitchhikers and other weeds. Well you know when you run thru a field or walk then you shower later in the evening and it’s like your being scratched by a cat!? I am pretty sure that when she started sweating in her sleep that night – that is what she felt like.
Broke my heart when I brought her out of her room. But alas, diaper cream by Aveeno stopped the itch, but didn’t heal Mommy’s saddness for her babe.

Between her scratching and the weeds this is what we ended up with at 11pm. This makes me SO SAD.
But then bright and early Aunt Angie
brought over some amazing gel and saved the day! And Nan was happy. And Mommy was happy that Nan was happy and we could all have a happy day! Was it all worth it… no, of course not. I hate seeing my baby girl like that, and clearly I wasn’t thinking about what she was walking thru. I’m still on Denver thinking. Chalk that story up to “CityGirl shoulda known better” & “Mom of the Year.” (Thank God the years almost over) Natalie is all better. The scratches went away the next morning.
And now I know… Don’t shoot deep within a pecan orchard… stay on the outside where there’s grass.
